Chapter 15
Continued Persecutions
Summary: This chapter talks about Dr. Flint’s visit,
offering Linda one more chance to accept his offer of putting her in a house
with her children. She was ready to decline but Dr. Flint gives her a week to make the right answer.
Linda knew that she couldn’t trust Dr. Flint’s promises so she refuses and he
tells her that she is going to his brother’s plantation.
Importance: Linda chooses to go to Dr. Flints’ brother’s
plantation because she has a hard time trusting white men with promises.
Connection to Theme: Linda’s grandmother is torn after she hears of Dr.
Flint’s plan of relocating Linda and her children. Aunt Martha goes and tries
to convince Dr. Flint of reconsidering, but to no avail. Linda knows that her
chances are low but still hangs on to a tiny string of hope.
